Key Questions: LMS & Learning Systems Challenges:
Our conversations and presentations at The LMS & Learning Systems Forum will be focused on key and “hot” questions that organizations are facing:
- New Topic: iPAD/Tablets and Learning Systems - Is our LMS and LCMS ready to serve/track content on tablets like the iPAD?
- Aging Learning Management Systems? “Our LMS is several years old and does not fully reflect or manage the rapidly changing learning landscape in our organization. What are other organizations in this situation doing? Replacing the LMS? Adding a layer on top of the LMS? Shifting content and functions to Collaboration and Talent Systems?”
- UserContent, Video and Social Learning? “There is a sharp growth in the use of UserContent, Video Stories, Social Learning and Collaboration in our organization. How are organizations managing and supporting the following modes: Dedicated Systems, integration with SharePoint and Google Apps, stretching the LMS and LCMS capacities with new add-ons or custom work?”
- Manager and User Cockpits & Dashboards? “How are other organizations providing managers and users with more dynamic and visible access to Learning Assets? Are there new models for managers or user cockpits and dashboards? What are strategies for making content significantly more discoverable by our workforce?”
- Desktop Video and Telepresence Learning Integration? “Our distributed workforce is beginning to use a range of desktop video (from corporate tools to Skype) for learning, coaching and collaboration. And, we are increasingly using live distributed events, including High Definition Telepresence. How do we map, integrate and leverage these trends with our existing Learning Systems?"
- Compliance and Learning Systems? “What are the range of ways in which organizations are using their Learning Systems and Talent Systems to cope with compliance, regulatory and continuing education requirements? How do we prevent ‘boring’ compliance-mandated learning from weakening the brand of our digital learning assets?”
- Learning Systems in UnCertain and Budget-Constrained Times? “How do we make significant changes in our learning management when there is a constraint on budget? Does ‘cloud-based’ computing hold any promise for reduced spending on learning functions? How do we build the case for increased investment in learning systems that is aligned with changing business requirements?”
- Alternatives to Learning Systems? “Are there organizations that have taken a dramatically different approach to enterprise management of learning: Enterprise or Federated vs. Business Unit approaches to LMS, LCMS and Content Management?”
- What’s Next in the LMS & Learning Systems World? We will conduct a series of discussions about the current state and 1 to 3 year “futures” of Learning Systems, which will include research and debate on these trends:
- Learning Apps: Will there be small “Apps” that are optimized for learning?
- Gaming & Virtual Worlds – What Happened? What happened to the fascination with Gaming and Virtual Worlds for learning? Was this a hype/fad or will it resurface?
- Mobile Learning Formats: What does the shift to tablets and mobile devices imply for Learning Systems? We will demonstrate a few MASIE Center Learning LAB experiments on the new iPad and Kindle devices.
- Open Source Trends: What are the roles for Open Source Systems, Applications and Tools?
- Search, Search and Search: How will users’ desire to have Google or Bing-like search capabilities for learning impact our Learning Systems deployment?
- Global Learning: Multi-site, multi-language, multi-legal approaches from around the world. And, what new models of learning management are perking up from Third World Regions?
- SCORM and New Standards: Is SCORM still relevant? What are the standards that organizations are planning to embrace: ISO, IMS, H.2xx, New Models?
- What’s Missing: We will spend an hour together defining what is MISSING in the Learning Systems field. What features, capabilities, functions and inventions should Learning Systems developers be working on to meet your needs in the next 1 to 3 years?
- Governance, Staffing and Integration of Learning Systems? Finally, we need to discuss how Learning Systems will be governed, located, integrated and evaluated by the organization. What are key trends in models for learning management in major organizations – from shared governance, to budget/charge models, to outsourcing, to significant integration with other systems and groups (Talent, Knowledge Management and Corporate Communications)?
